Des Moines Performing Arts has an exciting opportunity for students interested in arts education and event management.

We are seeking current college students for our internship program within the programming and education department. The Education Intern’s primary responsibilities will include supporting the planning and implementation of the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, audience engagement experiences and school-based programs.

Candidates can expect to gain experience in event management and performing arts education. Primary projects will likely include:

  • Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards: maintain database of school and adjudicator program materials; assist in the creation of communication pieces; support Awards Showcase implementation
  • Audience Engagement events, including master classes and Discovery Parties: assist in promotions and event preparation and management.
  • Professional Development for Teachers: assist in event preparation and management.
  • Applause Series performances: assist in the development of curriculum and marketing materials, research special school-based projects connected to identified shows.

This position is ideal for students majoring in theater, theater education or arts administration.

Excellent communication and organizational skills required. Experience in event management and working with youth, as well as a passion for the arts, is highly desirable.

This paid internship will begin September 2016. Applicants must be available a minimum of 15 hours per week, with more hours during peak programming times. This position is a semester-based temporary position; an extension for a second semester may be possible.

Development Intern

Des Moines Performing Arts is seeking a current college student who is interested in serving as an intern and providing a wide range of database, research, administrative, and general support to DMPA's development team. The selected candidate will receive hands-on experience with all development functions and can expect to gain invaluable experience in grant writing, annual fund, donor communications, and special events.


Specific Responsibilities:


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:


  • Assist the development staff in recording, acknowledging, and stewarding gifts

  • Prepare reports and presentations for internal and external use

  • Draft correspondence and appeals

  • Plan special events for donors and potential donors

  • Maintain donor files and other development materials

  • Attend all department and staff meetings

  • Assist with mailings and special projects as needed




  • Strong writing and communication skills

  • Desire to learn more about fundraising and development activities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications

  • Experience with databases is a plus

  • Good interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and attention to detail

  • A commitment to DMPA mission and vision

  • High standards of integrity and ethics


Hours, Start Date, and Duration


Flexible within business hours (8am to 5pm) with some evening or weekend work possible for special events. A firm commitment of 15 hours per week is required. The paid internship will begin in August 2016 and is a semester-based, temporary position; an extension through the 2016-17 academic year is possible depending on mutual interest and satisfactory performance.

Des Moines Performing Arts is seeking a guest focused, self-motivated, detail oriented and highly organized professional to play a leading role as a Ticketing Services Representative in our Ticket Office.  The ideal candidate for this position will have a natural passion for the performing arts and top notch customer service skills. 

The Ticketing Services Representative’s primary responsibility is to build long-term relationships with our guests and ticketholders by offering exceptional customer service and sales via phone, box office window or web-based interaction. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

The Ticketing Services Representative’s responsibility is to support ticket office operations by assisting with ticket purchases, processing orders and other requests while upholding the integrity of Des Moines Performing Arts’ Quality Standards.

  • Transactional/Administrative: Process ticket sales and exchanges accurately. Utilize resources such as process documentation when needed. Complete accurate balance out sheet at end of shift.
  • Guest Experience: Create positive, consistent guest experience by interacting in polite, professional and friendly manner. Avoid internal language and utilize the ‘service no’ as appropriate. Exhibit ‘guest first’ attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Retail/Service experience preferred and ability to demonstrate strong guest-focused engagement
  • Proactive thinking and ability to effectively complete projects
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to receive feedback and take action when appropriate
  • Minimum education level is High School graduate or equivalent
  • Job may require lifting boxes that weigh up to 40lbs
  • Must maintain a professional appearance
