The self-described vocal band of 23 years has been a longtime major influence on many subsequent vocal groups that have formed since The Blenders first performed in their hometown of Fargo in 1990, especially those in the Midwest. The Blenders’ own influences stretch far and wide and thel band has forged a sound that’s earned them a huge fan base, critical acclaim and accolades from recording artists such as pop diva Erykah Badu to the legendary Les Paul, plus three Emmy Awards.
The Blenders' musical style has been an ongoing process of experimentation and evolution. We started out doing strictly a-cappella in the early 90's when very few groups existed, and in the mid to late 90's transformed into a pop vocal band with instrumentation,” notes Darren Rust, the group’s bass singer, producer and arranger. “We then transitioned back into a-cappella in the 2000's with our early Christmas albums. After that, we put out a couple of tribute-type albums called Song's from the Soul, which again had a full band backing us up.
