Five Des Moines Performing Arts Invested Shows Receive Tony Award

The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing announced the 2024 Tony Award Nominations on Tuesday, April 30. Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) has invested in five nominated shows as part of the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), a consortium of 40 leading Broadway presenters, theaters, and performing arts centers. Nominated shows DMPA has invested in include: The Outsiders, Here Lies Love, The Notebook, Guttenberg! The Musical!, and Monty Python’s Spamalot. 

DMPA’s invested shows received a combined 21 nominations. The Outsiders received 12 nominations, including a nomination for Best Musical. The 77th annual Tony Awards will air live Sunday, June 16 at 7 PM CST on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. 

Nominations for each show are as follows: 

The Outsiders 

  • Best Musical 
  • Best Book of a Musical – Adam Rapp and Justin Levine 
  • Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre – Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) and Justin Levine 
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical – Brody Grant 
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical – Joshua Boone 
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical – Sky Lakota-Lynch 
  • Best Scenic Design of a Musical – AMP featuring Tatiana Kahvegian 
  • Best Lighting Design of a Musical – Brian MacDevitt and Hana S. Kim 
  • Best Sound Design of a Musical – Cody Spencer 
  • Best Direction of a Musical -Danya Taymor 
  • Best Choreography – Rick Kuperman and Jeff Kuperman 
  • Best Orchestrations – Justin Levine, Matt Hinkley and Jamestown Revival (Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance) 

Here Lies Love 

  • Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre – (Lyrics) David Byrne | (Music) David Byrne and Fatboy Slim 
  • Best Scenic Design of a Musical – David Korins 
  • Best Sound Design of a Musical – M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer 
  • Best Choreography – Annie-B Parson 

The Notebook 

  • Best Book of a Musical – Bekah Brunstetter 
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical – Dorian Harewood 
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical – Maryann Plunkett 

Gutenberg! The Musical! 

  • Best Revival of a Musical 

Monty Python’s Spamalot 

  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical - Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer
