1. CONTEMPORARY TWISTS MEET BELOVED CLASSICS

DMPA's 2024-25 Dance Series steps out of the box and into a world where classic meets contemporary. This season brings together renowned choreographers, dancers, musicians, and artistic directors to re-imagine some of our favorite productions. 

A holiday family mash-up for the whole family, The Hip Hop Nutcracker is a contemporary dance spectacle that smashes hip hop dance and Tchaikovksy’s timeless music together into a heart-stirring and inspirational holiday event. This re-imagined classic is brought to life by a powerhouse cast of a dozen all-star dancers, a DJ, a violinist, and MC Kurtis Blow, one of hip hop’s  founding fathers, who opens the show with a short set. Innovative digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City.

2. IMAGINATIVE CHOREOGRAPHY

The 2024-25 Dance Season is a celebration of exceptional artistry, where choreographers work with dancers and musicians to flawlessly create magic on stage. Each performance tells a unique visual story, creating an immersive experience and showcasing the talent of everyone involved. 

This season, travel down the rabbit hole MOMIX-style with Moses Pendleton’s newest creation “Alice,” inspired by “Alice in Wonderland.” As Alice’s body grows and shrinks and grows again, the performers extend themselves using props, ropes and even other dancers. Audiences will take a journey that is magical, mysterious, fun, eccentric and more.

These performances stand apart from the crowd as they re-imagine not only classic stories, but classic technique as well. Each meticulously crafted performance challenges the idea of what makes a classic, while paying homage to the artists who came before them. 

Performing with exclusively live music provided by some of Chicago's finest musicians, Chicago Tap Theatre is a vibrant dance company with a unique mission to preserve the quintessentially American dance form of tap and take tap to the next level of creativity and innovation. The company bridges the gap between tap and other forms of concert dance (such as jazz, ballet, and modern) by adopting a conceptual, narrative and more emotional approach to its work.
