There is a particular spark that comes from dancers at the edge of extraordinary careers — the precision of rigorous training, the hunger of discovery, and the emotional openness of artists stepping fully into their power. That spark is at the heart of Ailey II, the celebrated company that brings together the country’s finest early-career dance talent with the creative vision of today’s most compelling choreographers.

Founded in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, Ailey II carries forward Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to make dance accessible, expansive, and deeply connected to community. The company was created as a vital bridge between student training and the professional stage, giving emerging dancers the opportunity to grow through performance, touring, and work with leading choreographic voices.

For its first 38 seasons, Ailey II flourished under the leadership of Sylvia Waters, who was personally chosen by Alvin Ailey to serve as the company’s founding Artistic Director. In 2021, Francesca Harper stepped into the role, bringing her own history with The Ailey School and both AILEY companies into a new era of leadership. Under her direction, Ailey II continues to honor Mr. Ailey’s legacy while moving with fresh urgency, curiosity, and possibility.
