Inspired by Wicked, Iowa Students Are Making Good in Their Communities

When Wicked arrives at the Des Moines Civic Center this September, students from across Iowa will not only experience one of Broadway’s most beloved productions — they’ll also help bring one of its central themes to life.

Through Des Moines Performing Arts’ MAKE GOOD Project, participating students are committing to service projects that uplift their schools and communities. Inspired by Wicked and its message of doing good, even when it’s hard, the project invites students in grades 5 and up to think creatively about how they can make a meaningful difference in their own backyards.

Each participating group selected a project designed to benefit others. Some students chose to host a clothing drive to be sold for free in a For Good Garage Giveaway. Others volunteered with a local organization, created a school-based service project, and designed an original initiative that addresses a need in their community. The goal is simple: encourage students to work together, take action and reflect on what it means to “make good.”

After completing their projects, students will create a brief report sharing what they did, how it went and what the experience meant to the participants and the people they served. These student-created reflections may include video reels, photo boards, written summaries or other creative formats and will be displayed in the Civic Center lobbies during Wicked.

Participating students will also have the opportunity to attend Wicked at the Des Moines Civic Center during its Sept. 2–20 engagement. By connecting the experience of live theater with real-world service, the MAKE GOOD Project gives students a powerful way to engage with the show beyond the stage.
