When Parade takes the stage at the Des Moines Civic Center this season, it will be a homecoming for one of its stars. Iowa native Alison Ewing is part of the Tony Award-winning revival’s national tour, and she couldn’t be more excited to perform in her home state.

“This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Alison says. “Parade has earned its place in musical theatre history with its masterful direction, writing, and score. Not all musicals are created equal—this one is a gift to be part of.”

Raised in Mason City, Ewing grew up performing with the local Stebens Children’s Theatre, founded by acting teacher Gary Ewing, who left a lasting mark on her artistic journey. “The foundation I built there, along with my Iowa work ethic, gave me the tools to pursue theatre professionally,” she says. That path led her to New York City—and now, to cities across the country with this powerful touring production.

For Ewing, Parade is more than just a musical. Its story, set against the backdrop of early 20th-century America, feels deeply relevant today. “Our country is divided, and this show asks important questions about justice, truth, and humanity,” she explains. “My character stands by her husband at great personal cost. That act of courage is something I carry with me every night.”

The opportunity to bring a show with such emotional resonance back to Iowa makes this stop on the tour especially meaningful. “It’s incredibly powerful to share this story with audiences here. Iowans understand the value of doing what’s right, even when it’s hard.”

When asked what audiences should expect from the production, Alison offers a word of warning: “Bring a tissue.” With sweeping music by Jason Robert Brown and unforgettable performances, she promises an evening of breathtaking vocals and heart-wrenching drama.

And of course, she’s looking forward to a few hometown treats while she’s here. “Definitely Iowa corn on the cob—and a milkshake from Zombie Burger!”

Life on tour can be demanding, but Ewing stays grounded through simple routines and daily FaceTime calls with her husband and dog. “It’s never easy being away from home, but those moments of connection mean everything,” she says. “And I love finding a good coffee shop or quiet park in every new city.”

To young performers dreaming of the stage, she offers this advice: “Work hard. Be brave. Keep learning. You don’t need to be born in New York to belong in the Broadway community. Take classes, audition, and don’t be afraid to fail. The friendships and fulfillment this career brings are worth every challenge.”

Alison Ewing’s journey is a testament to talent, perseverance, and hometown pride. And when Parade arrives in Des Moines, her story will come full circle—right here in the heart of Iowa.
