SUGAR SKULL! and Local Events Shine Light on Día de los Muertos

SUGAR SKULL! A Día de Muertos Musical Adventure will be at the Des Moines Civic Center on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. as part of the Wellmark Blue Cross + Blue Shield Family Series. A spirited candy skeleton springs to life and takes 12-year-old Vita Flores on a magical, musical journey to unravel the true meaning of Día de Muertos. Tickets start at $12.50. DMPA’s Education Team will also have a fun Discovery Party full of crafts, story time, and more starting at 10 a.m.!

Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican celebration on November 1 and 2 to honor and remember deceased loved ones. Prepare for SUGAR SKULL! with your whole family at these local Day of the Dead events:

Saturday, Nov. 1

• Family Falliday Party at Storyhouse Bookpub with Nos Books and Des Moines Performing Arts 
  10:30 a.m.
  Celebrate Halloween and Día de los Metros with storytimes, facepainting, cocoa bombs, sugar skull crafts and a chance to win tickets to SUGAR SKULL!.
  

Sunday, Nov. 2

• Des Moines Public Library’s Day of the Dead Celebration 
  4-6:30 p.m.
  Try some tamales, pan de muerto, and Mexican hot chocolate. See the ofrenda and catrina created by Latinx Immigrants of Iowa in partnership with DMPL, enter to win SUGAR SKULL! tickets, and more.
