Performance Information

Join Capital City Pride and the Iowa Juneteenth Observance for Pride Storytellers, an evening where local community members take the stage to share true, personal stories centered on a single theme. Straight from the heart, these stories lean into honesty, vulnerability, humor, and deep emotional connection. It’s storytelling at its most authentic—raw, real, and powerfully human.

On Thursday, April 23 at 6:00 p.m., we will gather for “Pride Storytellers: Black & Proud.” Black LGBTQ+ residents of the Des Moines area will share personal stories about how they have built community and belonging for themselves. Through first-person reflections on identity, resilience, joy, and connection, these speakers will offer insight into their ongoing journeys of creating space in communities that have not always fully embraced every part of who they are.

In a time when conversations about race, identity, and LGBTQ+ rights are often reduced to headlines and talking points, this evening offers something different: real people, real stories, and real lives. Come meet your neighbors, coworkers, friends, and family members. Listen. Learn. Celebrate the beauty, complexity, and pride of living at the intersection of Black and LGBTQ+ identities.
